There's something in the earth deep below Elise Kavanagh's territory. A shadow is falling upon local demons to devour their flesh and harvest their souls. And it's coming for Elise next.

The Union has an easy way out. They want to send Elise into hiding again with her former partner, James Faulkner. All she has to do is surrender the territory and trust that they can protect the ethereal ruins, the dark gate, and the city she's come to know as home.

Greater powers have other plans for Elise and her fabled power as Godslayer--plans that mean surrendering her life and blood to the most powerful demon alive. But if she descends, there's no turning back. Once she gazes into the abyss, it will gaze back into her... and Elise will be damned forever.

So yeah, you already know that I’ve read the books in this world totally out of order. I didn’t pick up the Descent series until I started the Ascension series. For the record, I don’t recommend reading the books that way. I see a major re-read in my future – from beginning to end. So much happens in each and every one of these books and they all intertwine with each other. My bad reading habits can’t be done though, so I’ll just keep plugging along discovering what I missed. ;)

I think it’s safe to say that Damnation Marked changed pretty much everything. I’ve read a few books in other series since I finished the Ascension series and I forgot how intense things got when Elise and James were together. I doubt if I forget that again.

Damnation Marked switched POVs between several different characters, but the focus was Elise and James. It also switched back and forth between time frames. That may sound confusing, but it wasn’t. For one thing, both James and Elise were totally different people in their present than they were in their past. The story follows Elise and James in a time that they formed a magical bond that made them stronger to a time that that same bond was pulling them apart and making them weaker with the distraction.

There were several revelations in Damnation Marked. James discovered a secret hidden from him for years and it became pretty clear that he’s hiding something dark from everyone he’s close to. Elise spent most of the book dealing with the guilt she carried for causing so much pain and destruction. She also discovered secrets from a past that she really didn’t want to remember. Her final decision on how to make things better for everyone was gut wrenching… and then….

Okay… so can you guess which book I purchased as soon as I could once I was finished Damnation Marked? You guessed it. Dire Blood is now ready and waiting for me on my Kindle. Once again, if you haven’t read any books by S.M. Reine, you need to. Especially if you’re a fan of Urban Fantasy. Descent is dark, violent and intense and Reine sugarcoats, NOTHING. Don’t expect a HEA either… at least not yet. The writing is smart, the descriptions are detailed and the characters are as witty as they are intense and broken. Definitely broken… My first love in this world were the wolves in Seasons of the Moon, but it didn’t take me long to discover why James and Elise fans are just as loyal to them.

Damnation Marked The Descent Series Book 4 eBook SM Reine Reviews

O.O Elise doesn't know how to take the easy way out of anything, does she? She's a fighter. Even when the odds are stacked against her and her man-witch and she aren't on the best of terms, she barrels in head first and tries to do the right thing.

She's so tortured by all the ones she hasn't managed to save, too. Her exhaustion at life and at battling against the things that go bump in the night is tangible. Yet, when the chips are down, she's not ready to roll over and die. She wants to live. She wants things to be better. Whether that means teaming up with the demons who aren't there to hurt and harm or going toe to toe with the baddest demon on the block, she tries.

And, OMG!, her relationship with James absolutely kills me. She's rough around the edges, sure, but she loves him and seeing him with someone else is something that she can't handle. As hard as she is and as much as she doesn't show much emotion, I felt for her.

The Union is a little too... gung ho for my taste. I don't know how I feel about Anthony because I ultimately want to see the relationship with James reach its logical (to me) conclusion. Meanwhile, James has secrets AND he has secrets that have been kept from him.

IT'S VERY TANGLED. And that's part of the charm of this series. I don't know if I'll survive the next three books.

As I have read each of these it seems the next is better than the last. This holds true for this book. Learning more about Elise past continues to show how she became this exceptional fighter and I know there is yet more to this story.

The author has done an amazing job of keeping up with the present and mixing of the past in such a way that it isn't even confusing nor does it break the story line. Mostly it helps it I believe. This world and it characters is a complex one and yet she keeps it all balanced and at times "just one more page" and you find you have been reading all night.

I am completely hooked and have already started the next book.
I've done it again! Grrrr! Ever get done with one book in a series and without stopping to do a review, jump right in and read the next book? Well, that's what I did. Now I am 80% into book five and I can't remember book four. But that should give you a bit of an idea about how well I liked the book. I couldn't wait to see what would happen to the characters.

This book didn't end with a cliffhanger, by the way. One could very well let it go and read the next book when they can. But Reno and Tahoe were left in a big mess. I am afraid to go downtown now as I am sure I will see it all apocalyptic and ruined! That is the fun of these books for me. The author has included landmarks around here and has hell take over. And it is during the snows so reading it in the right season helps to add to the allure.

Elise, the main character is a strong person often too strong for her own good but we do get to see her insecurities and weaknesses. She has a good support system around her but often chooses the role as protector rather than put her friends/family in the way of danger. She's sassy and fun.

The problem I had with this book is the same I had with the last one, the jumping back and forth in time. If you read on the , especially using text-to-speech the sections go by and it is easy to get lost. I think asterisks would help to signify a new point of view or scene, especially when many of the sections contain the same people just earlier or much later.

Still, this is a fun series, and I feel I must continue reading until I catch up with Sara's stories. What an imagination!
